Program Philosophy

In the first three years of life, children transform from total dependency to crawling, reaching, grabbing, walking, talking, smiling, laughing, exploring, manipulating and interacting with other people. It is an understatement to say that growth during this period of time is significant; it is nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment of birth, newborns are learning, growing, and emoting. Development is so fast that changes can occur physically, cognitively, and/or socially/emotionally from one day to the next.

At Hillside Nursery, dedicated and knowledgeable teachers work hard to develop close, responsive relationships with the children. The teacher’s interaction with the children and their families is respectful, insightful, and supportive of the cognitive, physical, social and emotional life of the youngest child. We understand fully the positive impact of intentional, responsive care and we strive to create an atmosphere that is home-like and nurturing.

Our core values:

Parents are the primary caregivers; Hillside Nursery acts as an extension of parents’ caregiving.

Hillside Nursery is a family of families, seeking opportunities to deepen and expand relationships between and among children and parents.

In our classroom, the well-being of the child is paramount, since safety and security is a precursor to healthy child development.

A holistic and naturalistic child development philosophy permeates all aspects of Hillside Nursery, from a nature-based curriculum to seasonally-inspired themes for snacks and family gatherings.

To promote these values, Hillside Nursery recognizes the extraordinary contributions of its staff, volunteers and families and seeks to support and reward them accordingly.
